The Shoe Metaphor
So, as a trans livestreamer (www.twitch.tv/distractedelf by the way) I seem to come across a lot of people who are curious about trans folks, or haven’t really had a ton of interaction with us before. There’s a lot patience involved and alot of moderating when it’s downright hateful stuff, but I’ve come up with what I think, for my personal experience, is a pretty succinct metaphor for “So why’d you decide to become a woman?”
This is what I pretty much always say.
“Imagine you got a new pair of shoes. These shoes were the best shoes you’d ever worn. They were so good, you threw out every other pair of shoes you owned because who needs them, you have these awesome shoes!
However, after a while, they start to wear on you. They aren’t as comfy as before, they start to pinch, and they feel like they’re a size too small. It’s beginning to get uncomfortable to walk in them, but you’ve got to make do because you have no other shoes.
The longer you wear them, the worse they get. Holes form, water gets in, your feet get wet and gross and awful, and it’s just agony with every step. You could walk forever in these terrible shoes, but you wouldn’t be very happy about it. I just decided, fuck those fucking shoes.”
